OpenVPN & Windows 7

There’s a great GUI out for OpenVPN & Windows, located here.

However, this GUI includes an old OpenVPN, that is no longer compatible with Windows 7 and Windows Vista.

The TUN/TAP driver will be blocked due to compatibility issues, and when trying to connect to a VPN, you’ll get an error along the lines of:

All TAP-Win32 adapters on this system are currently in use

The simplest fix, is to install the GUI package (including the old OpenVPN binaries), and reinstall OpenVPN afterwards.

You can find the latest OpenVPN binaries here and the latest version, when writing this post here.

This will overwrite the old files and update the driver with a Windows 7 compatible driver.

Try to connect now, everything should work like a charm. 🙂

Thanks for this tip – I’ve been searching for 2 days trying various things to get the damn TAP installed on Windows Server 2008 R2 64x!

But I think that the newest version I used (openvpn-2.1_r22-install.exe) already had the GUI included in the installer, so you probably just need to install this one thing.

Yes, the OpenVPN installer for Windows now included the GUI as well. You no longer need to install the GUI separately.

Thanks a lot. I was struggling with this issue and all any website would say was enable and disable the TAP adapter, which did not work.

Knew it had to be a problem with OpenVPN and eventually your site came up.

Installed OpenVPN 2.1.3 and now it all works well.

We’re seeing this error when trying to connect from Windows 7 to more than one OpenVPN server at a time – something which Linux and OSX clients handle without any problem. Is Windows just broken here, or is there a way to get it working?

Not sure about that. I’m usually just connecting to one VPN server, and I honestly have moved away from Windows in general now. Haven’t tried oVPN on it in ages I’m afraid.

can anyone share the steps to configure TAP interface on windows:
    1) Assign IP address and subnet
    2) Enable IP forwarding
    3) Windows NAT rule to masquerade tap interface address with real physical adapter
